SLAM: A Poetry Slam

Posted by on Feb 19, 2019

SLAM! : Poetry SlamIt’s time for our fifth poetry slam of the season! Bring old poems, new poems, revamped poems, weird poems, angry poems … let’s slam all the poems!  But, wait!  How, exactly does a slam work?  It’s all very simple!
  • Poets enter into a two-round competition of poems with a strict 3-minute time limit where all the poems are judged by folks throughout the audience. The top 5 go on to the second round and the winner of that round nabs a cool 50 bucks! We often have prizes for the second and third place poets, too.
  • Each poem must be of the poet’s own creation;
  • Each poet gets three minutes (plus a ten-second grace period) to read one poem. If the poet goes over time, points will be deducted from the total score. Timing starts as soon as the poet engages the audience (makes eye contact, smiles, says something, etc)
  • The poet may not use props, costumes or musical instruments, and the poet must keep their clothes on  (we know … but come to an anarchy slam for no rules fun!)
  • Poets who have slammed enough times throughout the season will be invited to semi-finals; those poets who make it through to finals have a chance to be part of the Tonight It’s Poetry slam team and represent Saskatoon at the Canadian Festival of Spoken Word in the fall!
